You know of kids or friends who have been sucked into a gang, or who may be on the verge of getting sucked in. You want to help them stay out of gangs. Here are some programs that work with at-risk youth.

  • Circle of Courage by Ka Ni Kanichihk

Ka Ni Kanichihk works with Aboriginal youth 12 to 17 years old, in the Centennial neighbourhood of Winnipeg, and provides them with intensive skill development, cultural reclamation programming, education, counseling and support.

The program is based on the work of Dr. Martin Brokenleg and will provide kids with healthy and holistic culturally-authentic alternatives to gang life.

The 15 kids selected for the first stage of the Circle of Courage program will be involved in an intensive 12 month intervention program.

  • Ndinawe – Turning the Tides

Young people need a place to belong and Ndinawe provides that place.

At Ndinawe, youth are given support to help them leave or resist gang life. Ndinawe has a specific program called Turning the Tides that works with youth between the ages of 15 and 19 years.

Ndinawe encourages youth to get involved in positive programs and build skills they will need to find jobs. In fact, Ndinawe offers supervised employment for an average of 10 hours a week so participants can stay in school while they hold down part-time jobs.

  • West Central Youth Outreach by Spence Neighbourhood Association and West Central Women’s Resource Centre

If you live in the Spence neighbourhood and you know of a young person (12 to 18 years old) who is at risk from the violence of gang life, contact the West Central Youth Outreach program.

The program delivers intensive interventions to at-risk youth by providing them with up to three contacts a week with a Youth Outreach Worker who acts as a mentor to the youth. The outreach worker also provides a connection to community resources such as schools, jobs or recreation opportunities. They’ll also work with the family of the youth.

The RESPECT program at the West Central Women’s Resource Centre provides a weekly support circle for female care givers of at-risk youth and a youth support circle for female participants.
